Psychiatric Evaluation

Focused more on medical and/or biological histories to tease out root causes of mental health symptoms

Completed by a psychiatrist (MD) or an independently licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner (​PMHNP-BC)

Encompasses a comprehensive review of physical and psychiatric health across the lifespan

If necessary, can include physical examination to rule-out underlying medical issues

Bloodwork may be required

Generally one initial evaluation with multiple follow-ups to assess best medication regimen to address diagnosis

Psychological Evaluation

Aimed at deciphering personality traits, memory, attention span and cognitive abilities with standardized tests

Completed by a psychologist (PhD or PsyD)

Encompasses a comprehensive review of background, family history, symptoms and/or stressors

Generally a one-time visit ending in diagnosis with treatment recommendations
